Music, Medicine & Games

  • Do you want to enhance the listening experience of music?
  • Do you want to use technology to save lives?
  • Are you interested in the fast-growing field of video game development?

Have you ever considered the roles engineers play in this world?  Engineers have made an impact on just about everything we see around us.   Engineers play a role in more than just design, construction and manufacturing.  In addition to this, engineers have the ability to affect the music we listen to.  Engineers are pivotal in the medical field through the development of technology to enhance the quality of life for so many people.  Also, engineers work every day to develop entertaining games played by the masses in the lucrative video game market.

In order to spotlight these non-traditional engineering fields, the SMU School of Engineering invites students and parents to attend our first ever Music, Medicine and Games Program.  SMU Engineering staff and faculty will share their unique experiences and research that is taking place on our campus.

Speakers will include SMU faculty members Dr. Scott Douglas and Dr. Jose Lage who will talk about research they are currently conducting. Dr. Douglas will speak about how new recording techniques are changing the musical landscape both aesthetically and commercially and will demonstrate the connection between the arts and engineering. Dr. Lage will share information on his research into how gas moves across porous surfaces in the human lung, research that will lead to better understanding of every breath we take. Additionally, leaders from The Guildhall will share information about how their organization is working to produce some of the best video game developers in the nation.

Don’t forget SMU will be holding Mustang Monday the following day on October 13th.  For more information see:  http://www.smu.edu/admission/visit_0_mondays.asp
