Call for Senior Design Projects

Call for Senior Design Projects
for Management Science Majors

EMIS 4395 Senior Design is a capstone class for students completing a B.S. with a major in Management Science. These seniors have taken courses in management science, operations research, production and operations management, probability and statistics, and other courses on the use of applying advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions.

Each spring, teams of Management Science seniors take on consulting projects for local industry, government, and non-profit organizations. The objective of this course is to put into practice the quantitative decision-modeling methods that they have been studying, as a preview of life after graduation.

Projects have emerged from a wide range of applications, and the analytical models used include optimization, simulation, forecasting, queueing, and others. See example topics below.

Under the direction of their supervising professor, these groups typically:

  • meet with client organizations to define and scope a project,
  • design solution approaches,
  • collect empirical data,
  • develop and implement models,
  • test and validate the models,
  • apply the models to the empirical data,
  • draw conclusions, and
  • prepare recommendations for their clients.

Typical deliverables to the client are:

  • a final report
  • formal presentation
  • any software created and data gathered

Client responsibilities:

  • have suitable semester project
  • have time to meet with team
  • provide helpful feedback
