Abstract

The emergent of True-Bend-Insensitive-Fiber product is a major triumph for the fiber optics industry. By defining the requirements and understanding the trade-offs in optical performance, large-scale manufacturing compatibility, standards compliance, mechanical performance, compatibility with field equipments and installation procedures will be critical to identify the most cost effective alternative.

Biography

David Z. Chen, holds a B.E. degree in Precision Instruments, Optical Engineering, and an MS and Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics (specialized in Quantum Statistical, Nonlinear, Applied and Computational Optics). He spent five years working on super computers doing advanced parallel/vectorized numerical simulations in non-linear optics, Higgs Field dynamics, and quantum chaos theory. From 1995 to 2000, he designed and completed MCI’s network control center for combined voice, data and transport monitoring and provisioning in Dallas Texas. From 2000~2006, Dr. Chen was the technical lead for MCI’s advanced optical network technology development group. His main focuses were in Ultra Long Haul transmission technology, ROADM, next generation fibers, 40 Gbps and beyond technology, and new modulations. From 2006~2008, Following MCI’s merger with Verizon, Dr. Chen worked in Verizon’s Core Technology Organization focusing on Trans-Pacific-Express Submarine technology, New Bend Insensitive Fiber for MDU and FiOS applications, 100 Gb/s modulations, and WDM-PON technology, David has contributed several OFC/NFOEC post deadline papers (2000~2006), and has served as a subcommittee member of NFOEC. He is a member of OSA. Dr. Chen currently servers as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in Verizon’s Network and Technology Organization. His new focuses are Free Space Optics and Next Generation ULH/Metro fibers. Also, he is currently serving as an APOC subcommittee member and is an EE Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. Email address: david.chen@verizon.com
