Buoyancy is the net effect of fluid pressure on submerged bodies and is responsible for keeping boats afloat. Buoyancy on submerged objects can be very large and is usually the primary vertical force on fish and submarines. Buoyancy acts on airplanes and birds as well, but because the density of air is so small, the effect of buoyancy on flying craft is negligible.
