I pulled the gearbox from my Giulia Super a while ago with the intention of rebuilding it. Although the car had a decent substitute gearbox in it, I decided to go ahead with the rebuild... and to add a little extra.
The old GTA/Giulia TI Super gearboxes have lightened gears, which have less rotational inertia. Although this helps the car's acceleration a tiny bit, the main reason for the special treatment is to enable the gearbox to shift much faster. The syncros have much less work to do when they have less mass to accelerate and decelerate. If you hunt through this website, you find out that, although I do have a GTA gearbox, it is in sorry condition (and will be for some time!). Although the ratios are not ideal for racing, a stock Alfa box can be made into quite a racing box with some simple (if taxing) machining.
This is first gear, which weighed 2.18 pounds (991 grams) before machining, and 1.55 pounds (704 grams) after machining, a weight savings of 29% and an inertia savings of about 40%.
