I finally broke down and bought a short shifter for my MINI. The shift bushings and cables were just starting to have some play in them, so that was a good excuse to upgrade.
The first thing to do is to drop the exhaust pipe ahead of the catalytic converter. There's no need to drop the whole exhaust system, although on a stock system it would be more of a chore to push the exhaust pipe studs out of the mating flange. In this case (a Quicksilver exhaust) the bolts pull out easily.
