Giulia Super Engine Rebuild

(Was) My Giulia Super

Here is a modification that I highly recommend to anyone willing to perform the work. The steering idler arm on 105/115 Alfas is a common source of steering play and slop. Usually, a bit of water weeps in at the bottom of the assembly and washes away the grease around the bottom of the shaft. Then the shaft rusts and the plastic-over-brass-on steel bushing dies. Before this happens, drill two cross holes (red arrow) and one hole down the shaft to connect the cross holes to a Zerk fitting (blue arrow). The shaft is nothing but mild steel, so it is easily drilled. Then pump grease into the idler arm whenever you change engine oil. The idler assembly will last for many years!
