EE 5340/7340 Biomedical Instrumentation Laboratory 5:

Instrumentation Amp Design

There are two design approaches for an instrumentation amplifier (IA). You must decide whether to go with a single-chip (monolithic) IA or design one using three separate OP Amps. I recommend going with a single-chip IA. Analog Devices makes several good ones. Check out the AD620 (http://products.analog.com/products/info.asp?product=AD620). In this lab, we will design the IA for measuring the electrocardiogram. The characteristics of the ECG are:

  1. 0.5 – 4 mV (differential component)
  2. 0.01-250 Hz bandwidth

Your IA design should boost the signal level to about 10 V and should have a CMRR exceeding 100 dB. Design the IA, build it, and measure the CMRR by finding its common mode gain and differential mode gain at 60 Hz as explained in lecture. Also submit a frequency response plot (magnitude and phase) of your filter. Please submit weekly progress reports until the project is completed.
