Here you will find a list of some of the most popular Instant messaging programs and their latest version numbers. Most of the programs listed here are either freeware or open source, so they won't cost you a dime (so far only XChat is a paid service). However most of them will brandish an advertisement of some sort (mostly banners). There is no way to know which one of these is the best. After all it's a matter of taste. Most of the clients listed here can perform at or around the same level. Try some until you find one that you like. Note that some of these are multi-client programs (such as Trillian), whereas others are single protocol services (such as Yahoo). Last but not least: Beware that you may not be able to exchange files with other people if you and the other party are using different versions of a certain instant messenger client!
