FAVORITE INSTANT MESSENGER CLIENTS

Welcome to my Favorite Instant Messenger Clients Page.

Here you will find a list of some of the most popular Instant messaging programs and their latest version numbers. Most of the programs listed here are either freeware or open source, so they won't cost you a dime (so far only XChat is a paid service). However most of them will brandish an advertisement of some sort (mostly banners).

There is no way to know which one of these is the best. After all it's a matter of taste. Most of the clients listed here can perform at or around the same level. Try some until you find one that you like.

Note that some of these are multi-client programs (such as Trillian), whereas others are single protocol services (such as Yahoo).

Last but not least: Beware that you may not be able to exchange files with other people if you and the other party are using different versions of a certain instant messenger client! So, try to keep 'em up to date.

Hidden Smileys for Yahoo Messenger

How to run multiple instances of the Yahoo Messenger client:
Normally Yahoo Messenger does not allow users to launch multiple instances of the Yahoo client. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you overcome that problem.
1. Make sure that Yahoo Messenger is not running.
2. Create a backup of your registry. If you don't know how to do it, just try a simple search on Google, such as "backup registry".
3. Download the file called
ym8mc.zip and unzip the contents to your desktop.
4. Double-click the newly created file called ym8mc.reg and answer the question that'll pop up by clicking YES.
5. Once you have received the confirmation message launch Yahoo Messenger. That's about it!
NOTE: This method has been tested with YM 8.1.0.249 and works. If it does not seem to work, just restart your computer and launch YM again.

IMPORTANT!
This is a safe procedure and should not cause any problems. That said, make sure that you have created a backup before running the reg file. I will not assume any responsibility if something goes wrong.
