CSE 8389 Foundations of Formal Verification and Validation - Grading Policy
Grading Policy Project 1 20%
  Project 2 20%
  Test 1 (in-class) 30%
  Test 2 ( in-class) 30%

NOTE: Grades on homework assignments/labs/tests/final will range from 0-100. However, the final class grade will be scaled to fit the above grading policy (1 homework point IS NOT EQUAL TO 1 test point)

Late Assignments:

Unless a documented and legitimate reason is provided, all assignments turned in late will automatically have 20% of the total possible points deducted for EACH class period that has elapsed since the due date.  As an example, an assignment that was due on Monday but turned in on Wednesday will be graded as normal and then 20 additional points will be deducted for being late.  All assignments are due at the BEGINNING of the class period, I do not want to see students working on homework during the class period or final lab reports during the lab session.

Makeup Examinations and other assignments:

There will be no makeup examinations, a missed examination will result in 0% unless a valid and documented excuse is presented.  If possible, students should provide such documentation before the examination date.  In the event that prior notice is not possible, notification must be provided within 2 class periods following the missed examination.  In the case of a legitimate excuse for missing an examination, an alternative for making up this portion of total grade will be provided to the student. It will be up to the instructor to decide if the reason for missing the examination is valid or not. If a reason for missing an examination (or laboratory period) is proffered that is determined to be invalid by the instructor, there will be NO opportunity for making up the missed examination (or laboratory assignment).

Student Expectations:

          Please do NOT:
            1. Engage in TEXTING, EMAILING, WEB BROWSING, VIDEO WATCHING, MUSIC
LISTENING, or any other type of interaction with personal electronic devices UNLESS
it is directly related to the class. It is only acceptable for you to use your computer or other
personal electronic device during the lecture if it is DIRECTLY RELATED to the topic being
discussed. Students who are found to be using electronic devices in a manner not allowed
(as above) will be excused from class as this is distracting and rude to others while teaching
                and learning are occurring.
            2. Sleep in class. If you are so tired that you cannot stay awake, you will be excused to go
outside the classroom so that you can find an appropriate place to sleep. It is of no benefit to
you or your classmates to be sleeping while in class and is socially unacceptable behavior.
            3. Read newspapers or other material during the class while teaching and learning are occurring.
This is rude to your classmates and to the instructor.
            4. Do homework or other class assignments during the class while teaching and learning is
                occurring.
            5. Try to remember to have cell phones (or pagers) turned off or in silent mode during class.
            6. Bring people to class who are not officially enrolled.  Any exception to this rule must
be OKed by the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the next class period.
            7. Carry on conversations either verbally, electronically, or via passing notes during the class.
is distracting to other students and the instructor.
            8. Request that the final exam be administered to you at a time other than the officially scheduled
time.  Only in very rare circumstances will I allow a student to take the final exam at a alternative
                time.
            9. Eat a meal during the class.
          10. Share calculators or other supplies during an exam. You should bring your own supplies and
                be prepared.
          11. Do not ask to be excused for a nature-break during an examination. Try to prepare yourself
ahead of time. If the circumstances are dire and unavoidable, you will be asked bring all your
examination materials and personal communications devices (including cell phones, tablets, and
computers) to the instructor while you are outside the classroom. Furthermore, no more than a
single student will be allowed outside the classroom an exam at any given time simultaneously.
          12. Use an ink pen on examinations. You should use a pencil and eraser or some other erasable
writing device so that you can erase any errors to prevent the examination from being
excessively messy and thus possibly be graded incorrectly.
          13. Commit plagiarism in any assignments or documents to be handed in for grading including
the use of text or figures from notes and assignments. If you need clarification on the
definition of plagiarism, please search the web. A good starting point is the wikipedia site:

           14. Knowlingly ot wittingly violate the SMU Honor Code.
