EE 8390 – Topics in Wireless networking and laboratory

Course Information

  • Class Time : Wednesday 6:30pm-9:30pm

  • Instructor : Dinesh Rajan
  • Prerequisite : Permission of Instructor. At the very least, the student must have taken a basic course on communications, like EE 3373 or EE5370/7370 or EE 8370. Basic knowledge of channel coding and modulation, communication through Gaussian channels is necessary. Some familiarity with the physical layer of cellular/WLAN/Bluetooth standards will be useful. Sound programming skills (C/C++) in the Linux environment is needed. Send email to instructor if you have requisite background.

  • Voice communications using GSM
    Basic anatomy of a call, capacity planning issues.
  • GPRS
    Data throughputs.
  • Effects of antenna on cellular quality
  • Cell planning and coverage issues in wide area networks
  • Data communication in WLAN's
    coverage and overall throughput issues. Collision avoidance and multiple accessing techniques. Infrastructure and Adhoc operation modes.
  • Short range Bluetooth communications
    Piconet and scatternet formation. Topology maintainence and Multihop transmissions, Mobility issues.
  • Tailoring Apllications for wireless links
