I joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in August 1998, coming from the Artificial Intelligence Center, at SRI International, where I was a researcher in the Natural Language Processing Group. Returning to SMU was a homecoming for me, since in 1996-1997 I worked as a Research Associate in the CSE department. In 1997 I earned my PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California. In 1994 I earned another PhD in Computer Science, this time from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", in Italy.

My research interests include Natural Language Processing (primarily knowledge-based NLP), Parallel Processing and Artificial Intelligence. Some specific research topics in NLP include reference and other forms of lexical cohesion, computational methods for metonymy resolution and models of textual coherence. I am also interested in parallel processing on large knowledge bases (e.g. WordNet) and in Information Extraction, especially from the WWWeb. I plan to start working in the area of Digital Libraries and on Multimedia processing as well.

I am a member of IEEE, Computer Society, AAAI and ACL.

I am always looking for highly-motivated graduate and undergraduate students to work with me on research projects.
